Assistant Professor of Psychology (Developmental)

Full time Development

Job Description

The Department of Psychology at Amherst College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor from candidates with a Ph.D. in developmental psychology or a related field, beginning July 1, 2025. This appointment is ideal for candidates with a strong commitment to teaching and an active research program that can involve bright undergraduates from diverse backgrounds. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research focuses on adolescence and/or emerging adulthood.  The successful candidate will be able to develop and teach courses that include introductory psychology, developmental psychology, and an advanced seminar; will supervise honors projects; and will contribute to the overall academic environment of the psychology department and the college.  The teaching load is two courses per semester.

Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country.  During the 2023–2024 academic year, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students were Pell Grant recipients, nearly half identified as domestic students of color, and 11 percent were international students, with non-U.S. citizenship; 16 percent were the first members of their families to attend college.  Amherst is committed to providing financial aid that meets 100 percent of every student’s demonstrated need, and nearly 60 percent of our students receive financial aid.  Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse.  The department and college are committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty and to helping all members of our community thrive.  Learn more about the college’s strong commitment to institutional diversity here.

The psychology department is housed in the award-winning science center, with dedicated research space for each faculty member.  In addition, Amherst College offers generous support for faculty research and teaching, including fully paid sabbaticals, funds for travel to professional meetings, and summer support of undergraduate research collaborators.

Located in Western Massachusetts, with close proximity to Springfield, Massachusetts, as well as Hartford, Connecticut, Amherst participates with Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges and with the University of Massachusetts in the Five College Consortium.  The five institutions are located within 11 miles of one another and about 80 miles west of Boston.

Candidates are asked to submit electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/154360 a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a statement describing their scholarly development and accomplishment that includes a discussion of how undergraduates will participate in their research program; a statement describing their teaching philosophy and background, experience, or interests that are likely to make the candidate a strong teacher of a diverse range of Amherst students; and three sample preprints/reprints.  Candidates are also asked to arrange for three confidential letters of recommendation to be submitted.  The individual must have a Ph.D. in hand or have fulfilled all requirements for the degree by the start of the appointment.  Applications received by September 27, 2024, will be assured of full consideration.  Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
