The Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology is responsible for training medical and clinical psychology doctoral students, fully participating in clinical and academic activities of the National Capital Consortium training programs, and continuing education courses in University-sponsored programs. The CDP was established in 2006 as a tri-service behavioral health training consortium focused on preparing military and civilian behavioral health providers to better address the needs of service members, veterans, and their families. The CDP has evolved to serve as a leader in the development of a community of culturally mindful and clinically competent providers through the delivery of high-quality training, the convening of experts, and the dissemination of research-based treatment and content in military behavioral health.
Duties: The incumbent serves an Associate or Full Professor and Director, Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology (MPS), as such is responsible for teaching MPS graduate-level courses in areas of major expertise, mentoring military and/or civilian doctoral students, overseeing thesis and dissertation studies, and providing lectures to medical and graduate students as needed.
The incumbent will engage in programmatic research with the expectation to develop a nationally visible, extramurally supported program of research in support of the USU and/or DoD mission. The incumbent will assist with curriculum design, engage with multiple administrative assignments, contribute to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion initiatives across the University, and participate in professional, university, and departmental service activities. Writes and edits for publication texts, articles, monographs and other materials on the subject of medical and clinical psychology for use in the course of study, contribution to the field of psychology, and for research purposes.
As Director, Center for Deployment Psychology, incumbent serves as the Director of the CDP and reports directly to the Chair of MPS.. The incumbent is responsible for working collaboratively with the CDP and MPS leadership teams to develop, communicate, manage, execute, and sustain the strategic direction, education and training, scholarly output, and stakeholder engagement in the area of military behavioral healthcare.
The incumbent will lead and provide oversight to CDP to include strategic planning, budget development, personnel oversight, and portfolio management. The incumbent will lead the development of a strategically aligned training and research agenda, seeking funding, guiding its execution, and producing high-quality training programs, research initiatives, and knowledge products including scholarly papers and presentations. scientific papers and presentations. Incumbent will serve as liaison between CDP and various Federal and non-federal partners working to communicate, coordinate, and collaborate CDP activities research activity with all of the CPD partners. Ensures CDP efforts and outcomes are driven by comprehensive and detailed long-range and mid-range objectives, plans, processes, and associated metrics (process and outcome).
Serves as the chief executive of the CDP and heads the CDP leadership team. Oversees the developments and delivery of a program of behavioral health training, education, and research targeting military and civilian behavioral providers through various venues in including USU, other DoD, Federal partners, and partner institutions. Oversees a program and research evaluation efforts to identify and leverage new directions and emerging trends in behavioral health and behavioral health dissemination and training to achieve the quality of program to meet the strategic framework of the department, USU, and DoD.
Oversee the development of scholarly output of research focused on behavioral health and/or the dissemination/implementation of behavioral health information to include literature searches; planning and participating in research protocols; and preparing manuscripts and reports for publication in academic and policy journals. Represents the CDP and USU at professional gatherings, participating in meetings, and delivering presentations.
Lead the development of strategic activities for CDP related to behavioral health.
Engages government and academic stakeholders and represents CDP in both governmental and non-governmental forums. Serve on appropriate national-level committees, boards, task forces, and work groups consistent with and in support of the overall CDP strategic plan.
The incumbent builds a network of professional connections to support the mission of USU and the CDP. Strategizes, develops, and seeks funding for CDP’s research and training programs in behavioral health and operational psychology. Engages Federal partners to identify research needs and funding. Conduct scientific research in alignment with the CDP research strategy.
Works with CDP staff to assist coordinate annual CDP research budget and assures correct research funding administration. Leads project teams, provides oversight and authoritative technical guidance, and mentors CDP researchers and staff.
Qualification Requirements: Requires a minimum of an earned Ph.D. or Psy.D., from an accredited institution/University, or an equivalent doctoral degree and extensive experience in behavioral health training research, particularly in the area of dissemination and/or implementation.
The position requires: Substantial knowledge and demonstrated behavioral health research and/or training experience particularly focused on dissemination and implementation of empirically supported behavioral health care.
Experience and knowledge of dissemination and training of behavioral health treatments and/or operational psychology.
Knowledge and experience in teaching and educational administration at the college level or at a behavioral health training program (e.g., clinical psychology internship program).
Demonstrated experience managing funded research, training, or clinical programs.
Knowledge and experience as a manager or administrator of a research or clinical center or research teams with experience in personnel, finance, and project management.
Demonstrated experience to develop and implement research studies and/or clinical programs.
Evidence of multiple peer-reviewed academic publications related to the field or educational discipline of the position.
Exceptional written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to prepare presentations and represent the CDP, the department, or the University in academic, public, and federal settings.
The selected candidate must be academically qualified for a faculty appointment at the specified nominated academic rank in accordance with SOM and USU academic policies.
The following experience/knowledge are desirable: prior experience in military behavioral health and/or operational psychology; experience working in or with the Federal Government; practical experience in delivery of behavioral health care; and military-civilian collaboration efforts.
Represents the University at professional meetings, delivers lectures, and participates in meetings and panel discussions at other institutions. Maintains professional contacts with other medical schools and professional organizations throughout the country to locate and exchange information of mutual interest.
Other Position Factors: The incumbent of this position will hold a USU faculty appointment as Associate Professor (with tenure) or Professor (with tenure) in the Department of Medical and Clinical Psychology.
Assignment as Director of the Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP) is an administrator position assignment and is without tenure. The initial appointment as Director shall be for a term of up to five (5) years and may be renewed with no limit on the number of renewals. Assignment as Director is not a continuous appointment, and as such, the incumbent serves at the pleasure of his or her immediate supervisor(s) and may be relieved as Director at any time.
Nominees for this position shall be required to successfully complete a security background investigation. Failure to meet the background investigation requirements will result in the withdrawal of the position offer or removal from the position.
