The NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis is an innovative, dynamic, internationally renowned psychoanalytic training program, located within a preeminent research university. Founded in 1961, Postdoc has among its faculty a diverse group of leading psychoanalytic scholars and clinicians. They have special interests in a multiplicity of theoretical orientations, and the curriculum is organized into Contemporary Freudian, Independent, Interpersonal-Humanistic, and Relational tracks to consider their various views. The Program has 143 teaching faculty, 150 clinical consultants, 121 candidates, and approximately 625 graduates.

We are now inviting applications and nominations for the position of Director of this important program. The directorship is a full-time faculty position with an academic title at the level of clinical professor. Applicants must have a doctoral degree in a clinical mental health specialty. They must have graduated at least five years prior from a psychoanalytic training program with requirements commensurate with those of Postdoc and either hold a license that permits the practice of psychoanalysis in New York State or be eligible for such a license. The directorship is an in-person position.

The initial appointment will be for one three-year term subject to renewal for subsequent multi-year terms. (This is not a tenure-track position.) The appointment will start on September 1, 2025, pending administrative and budgetary approval.

The successful applicant will have a passionate engagement with the field of psychoanalysis and its ongoing development. In addition, the applicant will have demonstrated distinguished scholarship, immersion in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis, and a proven commitment to issues of equity and inclusion in psychoanalysis.  This will include the ability to maintain a thoughtful, just, humane, and steady presence amidst the profound global and societal challenges impacting academic institutions in this era.

The position requires an energetic and skilled leader with prior organizational/managerial experience, someone who can navigate complex institutional and interpersonal dynamics, assume as well as delegate responsibility, and work collaboratively within the Postdoc community and the University.

The Director reports to the Dean of Arts and Science. The Director has responsibility not only for the Program’s academic requirements and the progress of its students, but also for the component positions and activities that are essential to its mission. The Director thus oversees the Clinical Director, teaching faculty, clinical consultant faculty, and all committees, including the Program’s Executive Committee. The Director is responsible for the Program budget and can be expected to teach one course or the equivalent per semester in the Program. The Director additionally conceives and implements fund-raising initiatives; maintains the Program’s state and national psychoanalytic accreditations; and represents and promotes the Program both within the University and at local, national, and international meetings.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $95,000 - $145,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
