Job Description

The Association for Psychological Science (APS) is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy Director.  The Deputy Director is the second most senior position in the organization and has responsibility for the effective and efficient functioning of the Association’s day-to-day administrative and program operations.  In this role, the Deputy Director ensures that the organization’s communications and initiatives serve the mission of APS to advance psychological science in all of its facets and to promote the integration of diverse scientific perspectives across the field.

The Deputy Director reports to the Executive Director and supervises director-level employees. The central priorities for this position are ensuring that the organization’s activities are financially and administratively stable and provide a strong foundation for continued growth of the organization’s programs across all areas, including membership, journals, meetings, and public outreach.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Psychological Science or related field (although non PhDs with relevant experience will be considered) and a minimum of 10 years of administrative leadership experience in a non-profit or public organization.  Also required are the highest integrity and work ethic, and a strong commitment to the mission of APS and to promoting excellence in psychological science across all areas.  The ideal candidate will demonstrate exceptional written and editorial skills; substantial financial management experience; exceptional organizational, analytical and planning skills; outstanding problem-solving abilities; and the ability to work collaboratively to achieve program goals.  The ability to translate and represent psychological science research to a broad audience is a plus, as is strong knowledge of the public policy arena, particularly around federal science funding.  APS values the ability to inject creativity and innovation wherever possible in the organization’s activities as well as a great sense of humor.
