Job Description

The Psychology Department at Furman University announces an open-rank tenure track position to begin August 2019.  We will give full consideration to new PhDs as well as experienced faculty.  We seek a psychologist with strong training in neuroscience who has an active program of research. Research areas could include human cognitive neuroscience or animal electrophysiology. The teaching load is 5 courses (or 4 lab courses) per year divided over 2 semesters. The successful candidate should be prepared to teach an intermediate-level neuroscience course, such as sensation and perception or animal behavior.  Candidates will also be expected to regularly teach research methods and statistics, and an upper-level seminar in an area of interest. A PhD is required, and teaching experience is preferred. Candidates must be committed to exemplary teaching and maintaining a productive program of research. Candidates are also expected to become exceptional advisors and mentors to undergraduate students. The Psychology Department has outstanding teaching space and dedicated space for research with human participants or small colony animal research. There is excellent university support for teaching, undergraduate research, and faculty scholarship through substantial start-up funds, internal grants, and administrative support for obtaining extramural funding. The psychology department’s research program supports approximately 24 research students each summer. 

The successful candidate will join the eight-member Psychology Department and will be expected to contribute to both the psychology and neuroscience majors.  The neuroscience major is an interdisciplinary program that is led by two psychologists and three biologists.  To learn more about the Psychology Department and the neuroscience major, go to: www2.furman.edu/academics/psychology and www2.furman.edu/academics/neuroscience.
