Job Description

The University of Southern Maine seeks to fill a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Psychology with a specialization in Social and/or Personality Psychology for a joint faculty hire with our Honors Program starting September 2019. Successful applicants will demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in general education and in their discipline.  In addition to teaching, the faculty member will provide formal academic advising to our growing Honors student population.

 

The faculty member will design and teach a mix of the following interdisciplinary Honors courses: HON 215 Thinking in Honors, HON 311 Community-Based Learning, HON 331 Internship and HON 415 Capstone, in addition to PSY 230 Social Psychology, PSY 338 Theories of Personality, and psychology elective-based courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. We are especially interested in applicants who can demonstrate their direct contributions to students’ academic success and persistence through active and engaged learning, mentoring, and advising. The teaching load for this position is 3 courses per semester.

 

Primary duties will include, but are not limited to, undergraduate teaching in honors and psychological science, a program of research/scholarship, effective student advising/mentoring, and service to the department, university, community, and discipline. The Psychology Department is housed within the College of Science, Technology, and Health. Department offices are located on the Portland campus where the majority of courses are held, but courses may be offered on any USM campus or online, depending upon faculty availability and interest, among other factors. Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Social and/or Personality Psychology, or closely related sub-field, by the time of appointment (estimated 9/03/19).
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary learning
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching.
  • Demonstrated potential for a program of research which can engage students and lead to peer-reviewed publications and presentations.
  • Experience/interest in applying innovative learning practices (e.g., flipped classroom, discussion-based instruction, and/or community-based learning).
  • Commitment to/experience in fully engaging with students as a faculty, advisor, and mentor.
  • Commitment to departmental, university, community, and disciplinary service.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least one semester teaching undergraduate social psychology and/or theories of personality.
  • Experience teaching in an honors setting/seminar style instruction.
  • Interest/experience in social justice.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate students.

 

Salary is $55,000
