Job Description

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is seeking a postdoctoral fellow for a multi-year project focused on identifying how physical and cognitive factors influence the means by which organisms interact with one another and their environment. Post-doctoral fellowship opportunities of 1 year with the potential for an additional year based on performance are available for qualified candidates to pursue funded work to program, conduct, and analyze psychophysical experiments involving human volunteers. As part of the position, the postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with researchers at ERDC, Oregon State University (OSU) and the University of Hartford to study the cognitive mechanisms governing the dynamics of human crowds. The research will entail conducting psychophysical experiments and using Virtual Reality (VR) tools to investigate how cognitive and perceptual factors influence how people safely navigate public spaces and buildings during evacuations. Work will take place in the Cognition and Action in Real and Virtual Environments (CARVE) lab at OSU.

How to Apply / Contact

Successful applicants will have a PhD in experimental psychology or closely related fields, such as cognitive science, engineering, or neuroscience. Knowledge, skills, and abilities required to design, direct, and analyze experiments with human subjects are necessary requirements of the position.  The applicant is also expected to have programming experience (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R). Experience with the use of virtual reality and an interest in collective behavior are preferred. The salary will be $50,000 to $60,000 USD, dependent upon experience

Applicants should submit their CV along with a cover letter that details the applicant’s research interests and experience to:
