Applications are invited for an Assistant Professor faculty position in the Department of Psychology and Philosophy within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Sam Houston State University, beginning Fall 2019. Qualifications include a doctorate degree in psychology and background and/or expertise in social or social-cognitive psychology with research interests in forensic psychology or issues related to psychology and law. Responsibilities for this position include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in social and social-cognitive psychology, with a preference for individuals who could teach courses related to forensic/legal psychology, quantitative methods, and the cognitive and affective bases of behavior; conducting research in the candidate’s area of expertise with the potential for extramural support; advising and supervising undergraduate and graduate student research, with the potential of chairing theses and dissertations; and providing service to the Department, College, and/or University as needed. Additionally, candidates should be able to establish a productive program of research that would include working with undergraduate and/or graduate students. Applications from individuals who are ABD may be considered, but the degree must be conferred before the start date of the position.

Sam Houston State University is located in Huntsville, TX in the beautiful piney woods of East Texas approximately one hour north of the ethnically and culturally diverse Houston metropolitan area. SHSU is classified as a “Doctoral Research University” by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education. SHSU serves a large number of first generation students. The department is the largest in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, combining 20 full-time tenure-track Psychology faculty and 11 full-time Philosophy faculty. There are currently 750 students pursuing the undergraduate Psychology degree, two psychology master’s programs (general and clinical), a CAEP-accredited and NASP approved specialist in school psychology program, and a highly-ranked APA-accredited clinical doctoral program (with a strong forensic emphasis). The department houses the Psychological Services Center, which is staffed by pre-internship doctoral students working under the supervision of licensed clinical faculty. The Center provides court-ordered forensic evaluations for 22 Texas counties as well as mental health services to surrounding communities.
