Job Description

A postdoctoral researcher position is immediately available within the Education and Workforce Development division of RTI International. The applicant will work closely with Dr. Barbara Biesecker on study design and execution, writing grant proposals and analyzing data. The first project will involve participating in the development and clinical study use of a decision tool to help parents decide whether to receive secondary findings from genomic sequencing on their child. The second project involves helping to design a return of results protocol for medically actionable results from a large cohort study ongoing.


This position will offer dedicated mentoring by the PI and opportunities to work within several different teams of investigators. A committed postdoc will have opportunities to write papers and present the research at national meetings. A postdoc who is successful in exploiting the opportunities offered at RTI will be well prepared for a subsequent research position upon completion the terms.


This position is a 12-month term assignment with potential for annual renewal, up to 3 years, pending available funding.


Responsibilities for project 1:

  • Manage the team efforts at RTI and our clinical collaborators at Johns Hopkins Medical Center
  • Assist with IRB exemption and related study documentation
  • Help to Beta-test the intervention
  • Conduct data analyses
  • Prepare results for conference presentation and manuscripts for publication


General responsibilities

  • Contribute to grant writing efforts
  • Assist with writing of a systematic literature review
  • Conduct data extraction for a second related systematic literature review
  • Other duties as assigned by PI

Responsibilities for project 2:

  • Assist with designing a return of result protocol
  • Contribute to selection of key variables related to decisions to learn medically actionable results
  • Work within a multi-disciplinary international team
  • Assist with strategic planning for follow-up projects



  • Ph.D. in health psychology, social psychology, health communication or related field.
  • Expertise in the measurement and assessment of health behavior, decision science, health communication, and/or social psychology related to health
  • Previous experience in genetic counseling or familiarity with genomics reserach
  • Previous experience in the collection and analysis of health outcome data
  • Previous data analytic experience using SAS or SPSS and Mplus software programs
  • Demonstrated ability to publish manuscripts in peer reviewed outlets.
  • Able to work independently in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficiency in English required
