The Association for Psychological Science (APS), a growing, DC-based scientific organization, seeks an entry-level employee with a background in psychological science and strong writing skills for the role of Government Relations & Policy Assistant.

About the Position

APS was established in part to provide a strong voice and visible presence for psychological science in the public, scientific, and policy arenas. A central component of APS’s government relations and science policy efforts is collecting and disseminating information about relevant research, funding, and policy to APS’s membership of scientists, applied practitioners, and students.

Reporting to the Director of Government Relations, the Government Relations & Policy Assistant will gather, write about, and disseminate information on psychological science, including emerging applied psychological research, funding opportunities for behavioral scientists, and policy changes of relevance to scientists. The Government Relations & Policy Assistant will also manage and organize administrative aspects of APS government relations and policy activities. Specifically, tasks will include:

Educating APS membership on psychological science opportunities and topics

  • Identifying funding opportunities and policy developments of relevance to APS members both in the US and internationally
  • Writing announcements and updates for inclusion in APS email newsletters, the APS website, and the APS Observer membership magazine (print and online)
  • Collaborating with the APS Marketing Department to enhance the visibility and relevance of government relations and policy content for APS members
  • Gathering information on funding structures and opportunities for psychological science outside of the US
  • Working with APS’s News & Information Department on longer, reported stories, as time allows
  • Attending local meetings and webinars, as needed, for reporting back to APS staff

Assisting with APS government relations and policy activities

  • Tracking and organizing information related to APS policy efforts, including information about funders of psychological science published in APS journals, data on science funding from APS journal partners, and psychological scientists engaged at the federal level (such as on federal advisory councils)
  • Coordinating with the APS Membership Department to compile, manage, and search records related to APS members and other key individuals to facilitate their engagement in APS activities
  • Facilitating administrative aspects of visitors and guests at APS Conventions by collaborating with the APS Meetings Department
  • Producing reports on psychological science and policy for presentation to APS staff and leadership

Other responsibilities as assigned.

 Skills and abilities requested for this position:

  • Bachelor’s degree; psychological science or behavioral science field preferred; background in government a plus
  • Willingness to learn about and enthusiasm for psychological science
  • Exceptional writing skills; ability to communicate diplomatically both in writing and verbally
  • Exceptional organizational skills, and ability to coordinate multiple assignments and meet deadlines
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Generally comfortable with technology and working on the web; experience with WordPress or other content management systems a plus
  • Experience with MailChimp a plus
