Job Description

Subject to funding, the University of Maryland Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) seeks to hire a postdoctoral research associate to work on projects regarding the intersection between psychology and security/intelligence. For instance, the postdoc may work on the detection and mitigation of insider threat; social influence; computational methods of detecting personality; and other relevant types of computational social science. An insider threat is a person from within the organization who represents a danger to an organization due to malicious or negligence.

Duties:

  • Work with a multidisciplinary teams of research scientists (e.g., psychologists, data scientists, linguists) to design and carry out research
  • Review and synthesize existing literature
  • For insider threat research:
    • Identify gaps between current methods for detecting and mitigating threat (or ensuring a trusted workforce) and potential innovative methods for better detection and mitigation
  • Prepare applications and maintain records for the Institutional Review Board (IRB)
  • Direct and conduct data collection in a variety of settings and using a variety of methods
  • Train faculty research assistants and undergraduate assistants
  • Analyze data qualitatively and quantitatively, such as applying established and new analysis methods to novel data sets
  • Develop new analysis methods and design methods, such as for deploying detection measures for possible insider threat in the field
  • Prepare presentations, reports, and scholarly publications related to research

This is a full-time position with benefits. The initial term is for 9 months and is renewable subject to the availability of funding. The applicant must have an interest in building expertise in and conducting research in the field of insider threat detection and management, with the possibility of also conducting research in computational social science.

Required skills and experience:

  • Ph.D. awarded before start of work in psychology (preferred, and specifically in relevant aspects of cognitive, social, and/or personality), criminal justice, risk management, or a related field with fundamental knowledge of social influence, human cognition (memory, learning, etc.), teamwork and group dynamics, individual differences, and related topics
  • Knowledge of human subjects ethics; writing and getting approved Institutional Review Board (IRB) research protocols
  • Writing and synthesizing information and academic articles for literature reviews
  • Collecting human subjects data using multiple different methods (i.e., interviews, surveys, experiments, observation, and annotation/coding)
  • Statistical analysis techniques on human subjects data (e.g., in R, SPSS, SAS) at a Ph.D. psychology level
  • Directing and training junior researchers (e.g., undergraduate research assistants)
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral/presentations and written
  • Experience working in a team as well as independently, to strict deadlines in established parameters

Preferred:

  • Additional advanced statistical analysis techniques (e.g., nonparametric statistics; multilevel modeling; structural equation modeling)
  • Computational / data science techniques such as familiarity with machine learning packages
  • Experience analyzing social media and other electronic interaction data
  • US. Citizen strongly preferred
