Job Description

The Department of Psychology at Montana State University (MSU) in Bozeman seeks to hire a tenured or tenure-qualified faculty member in Psychological Science (specialty area open) at the Associate or Full Professor level. The successful candidate will have a well-established research program and a strong record of research productivity, relative to the candidate’s level of experience. Research area is not specified; preference is given to candidates who broaden the areas of expertise represented by the current faculty. The department has eight Psychological Science faculty at MSU with strong research in the department’s four cross-cutting themes: attention, memory, and thought; equity, diversity, and disparities; health, resilience, and well-being; and motivation and emotion. Preference is given to candidates with a well-developed and externally funded research program that complements these areas.

The successful candidate will be a dynamic scholar with the ability to maintain a funded research program that fosters participation by undergraduate and graduate students, have excellent written and oral communication skills, have the ability to inspire and mentor students and junior faculty, have effective interpersonal skills including the ability to collaborate successfully with faculty, staff, and students, and have an appreciation for diverse constituencies, especially the ability to help students from underrepresented backgrounds succeed.

Required Qualifications include a Ph.D. in Psychology or related field, experience in a tenure-track position or equivalent research and teaching experience, established research program with a successful record of publishing high-quality and original research in disciplinary refereed journals, demonstrated experience in teaching, advising and mentoring undergraduate students, and evidence of meaningful university and professional service, leadership, and/or outreach.  Preferred qualifications include evidence of an externally-funded research program that will complement and expand current MSU programs, and demonstrated commitment to supporting, promoting, and building an inclusive and culturally diverse campus environment.

The MSU Psychology department has approximately 350 undergraduate majors, 90 psychology minors, and a Ph.D. program in Psychological Science. MSU has many opportunities for collaborative work both within and outside the department, including with the Center for Mental Health Research and Recovery, the Center for American Indian and Rural Health Equity, Montana INBRE, Montana-Alaska Clinical Translational Research Program, the Montana Engineering Education Research Center, and the Western Transportation Institute.
