Job Description

William Paterson University invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position to lead the department as Chairperson at the Associate or Full Professor rank in the Department of Psychology, beginning September 1, 2020. 

 

The successful candidate in this position may be immediately tenure eligible.  Candidates will be informed of the conditions that need to be met to be eligible for tenure upon hire.

 

The position, which reports to the Dean, Humanities and Social Sciences, includes teaching undergraduate and, based on their area(s) of expertise, graduate students. Research and service engagement is expected. The area of expertise is open.

 

The Department Chair advocates for the Department, oversees departmental budgets, institutes administrative policies, schedules courses, hires adjunct faculty, and ensures the smooth running of the Department. The Chair works directly with students and faculty, resolving their issues and concerns.

The Psychology Department, one of the largest departments at William Paterson University, offers BA, MA and PsyD degrees.  The department is composed of dynamic and engaged faculty. The department offers a diverse student body opportunities to apply their classroom knowledge to a variety of real-world situations. Hands-on laboratory experiences give students an opportunity to design and conduct their own research.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Faculty:

  • Teaching courses within the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise
  • Scholarship: conceptualizing, developing, executing, and maintaining a research agenda designed to lead to scholarly publications and presentations
  • Service: actively participating in service opportunities within the department, college, university community; advising and mentoring students

Department Chair:

  • Leading the department in developing and implementing immediate and long-range departmental goals and objectives; coordinating curricula
  • Encouraging and assisting faculty to improve professionally; promoting inter-departmental cooperation
  • Assuring provisions regarding retention, tenure, and promotion are followed
  • Hiring and monitoring the evaluation of adjunct faculty
  • Convening department meetings
  • Performing other relevant duties

Qualifications:

 

Required qualifications:

  • Earned Doctorate in Psychology
  • Demonstrated track record of recent (two to three years) academic leadership
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity
  • Tenure eligible

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience as a department chairperson in higher education
