Professor of Neuroscience

The Program in Neuroscience at Bates College invites applications for an open-rank position to begin in the fall of 2024. We welcome applications from any sub-discipline in the field of neuroscience, however, we are especially interested in candidates whose work focuses on systems neuroscience or cognitive and behavioral neuroscience, and has clinical/medical applications. Bates values innovative, inclusive pedagogy and active scholarship and seeks applicants who can successfully integrate undergraduates in their research. The College and the Neuroscience Program are committed to enhancing the diversity of our campus community and curriculum. We welcome applications from individuals who are broadly trained with a Ph.D. from Neuroscience, Psychology, or related fields.

The duties of this position include the three main areas of faculty work: teaching, professional achievement, and governance and engagement. Bates faculty teach five courses per year (laboratory sections count as 0.5-course credits). Teaching responsibilities for this position include contributions to the general education curriculum, Introduction to Neuroscience as well as Medical Psychology, and additional courses that could include lab-based instruction in topics such as cognitive neuroscience, systems neuroscience, or computational neuroscience. The new faculty member will take part in our academic advising program, and will join ongoing initiatives in inclusive pedagogy, equity and inclusion, and curricular renovation. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a signature and independent research program involving undergraduates, advise senior theses, and also to take part in our system of shared governance.

Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required by August 1, 2024. Additional relevant work, either before or after graduate school, is seen as beneficial but is not required.

Applicants should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, unofficial graduate transcripts, a teaching statement and evidence of teaching effectiveness (either included in the teaching statement or in separate documents), a sample publication, and a research statement. The candidate’s past and potential contributions to equity, inclusion, and diversity with regard to underrepresented groups should be addressed either in a separate, additional document or integrated into the teaching and research statements.
