Job Description

The Department of Kinesiology and Health at Rutgers University - New Brunswick invites applicants for a tenuretrack position in areas of Skeletal Muscle Physiology and Exercise at the level of Assistant Professor to begin in Fall 2024. Candidates with emphasis on skeletal muscle physiology, neuromuscular control, muscle biochemistry, health and disease, and human intervention with translational capacity across the lifespan are encouraged to apply. Preferred qualifications include a focus on physical activity/exercise intervention to improve health outcomes that complement other existing areas of expertise within the department. Responsibilities of the position include contributing to a collaborative environment promoting scholarship, teaching and service activities at the departmental, college and University levels, as well as to the greater professional community.  This is a full-time, tenure track, 10-month appointment with a competitive start-up package and salary range commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The faculty appointment will be in the Department of Kinesiology and Health in the School of Arts and Sciences. The Department is a unit of the Division of Life Sciences ( that also includes the Departments of Cell Biology and Neuroscience, Genetics, and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry. The Division supports university wide research centers such as the W.M. Keck Center for Collaborative Neuroscience. Further, collaborations exist across these programs including, but not limited to The Waksman Institute, the New Jersey Institute for Food, Nutrition, and Health, the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, Brain Health Institute, as well as the basic and clinical sciences departments of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establish and develop an active, independent research program supported by federal and state funding agencies, foundations, and/or industry collaborators.
  • Teach relevant undergraduate and graduate level courses in Kinesiology related to skeletal muscle physiology.
  • Oversee graduate theses and dissertations, and undergraduate independent studies and honors projects.
  • Serve on departmental, school and university committees or boards, as assigned, elected, or based on interests in a collaborative manner.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in Kinesiology or a closely related field by the date of hire.
  • An initial record of research productivity as demonstrated by high-quality, peer-reviewed scientific publications.
  • Teaching experience relevant to muscle physiology and related fields at the university level.
  • A commitment to teaching, research and service that fosters and contributes to advancing understanding and outcomes for underrepresented groups.
  • Experience collaborating in diverse teams and mentoring students with a focus on increasing health equity for historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, gender- and sex-based minority groups and people with disabilities. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-doctoral training and clear potential to secure independent extramural research funding related to skeletal muscle physiology.
  • Knowledge of physical activity/exercise intervention in health and disease and application of this knowledge in the educational and classroom setting.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive approaches for diverse learners and a respect of inclusive learning in academic settings.
  • A demonstrated ability to use technology in innovative ways to enhance teaching of courses related to biomechanics, motor control, and exercise science.
