Senior Science Policy Officer
Reporting directly to the Chief Scientific Officer in the science directorate, the incumbent is responsible for advancing psychology as a science and as a means to promote human welfare through interactions with federal policymakers across government. Primary aims are to enhance federal support for psychological science and to promote evidence-based public policy informed by psychological science. Required Qualifications: Master’s or doctoral degree in psychology, other scientific field, or policy required.  (Doctoral degree preferred.) Five years of relevant experience in policy, regulatory, or advocacy work required.  Doctoral degree can substitute for up to 3 years of experience. Microsoft Office suite of programs. Responsibilities: Influence research policies within research funding agencies to ensure a positive outcome for psychological science. Develop and implement strategies for increasing the share of federal funding dedicated to psychological and behavioral research; for increasing the visibility and understanding of psychological science within research funding agencies and ensuring that psychological scientists are represented within the peer review, policymaking and advisory committee structures.   Implement these strategies by meeting with, providing research for, and representing APA policies to institute and agency directors, program staff, and Executive branch policymakers. In collaboration with the Chief Advocacy Officer and Advocacy Office staff, influence public policy-making activities on Capitol Hill to ensure positive outcomes for psychological science and to promote evidence-based policy decisions. Develop and implement strategies for increasing the share of federal funding dedicated to psychological and behavioral research; for increasing the visibility and understanding of psychological science among public policymakers; and for enhancing the utilization of psychological research by policymakers. Implement these strategies by meeting with, providing research for, and representing APA policies to Members of Congress and their professional staff members. Undertake special projects such as scientific exhibitions and congressional briefings to demonstrate the science of psychology and educate congressional policymakers. Establish and maintain a network of contacts with other professional, consumer, scientific, provider, and government-related health organizations and coalitions, both to strengthen APA's ability to influence public policy as part of a group, and to ensure that APA's interests are fully represented in the agendas of such coalitions. Research and write: legislative proposals, amendments and report language; congressional testimony to be presented by APA members; APA position papers, statements, briefing sheets, newsletter articles, and grassroots action alerts; official comments to federal agencies on proposed regulatory action; and correspondence to key lawmakers from the APA Chief Executive Officer and Chief Scientific Officer. Develop and distribute other documents that represent APA's views on various legislative, regulatory and/or scientific or public interest issues to Congress, federal agencies, other organizations, and the public. Consult and coordinate with relevant APA members, and APA headquarters staff in the development of APA positions and policy strategies; write papers, memoranda, briefing materials, statements, and other documents to keep these individuals fully informed on the status of legislative and regulatory initiatives undertaken. Serve as liaison to APA divisions with relevance to the designees assigned portfolio. Create or enhance opportunities for scientific psychologists to participate in federal advocacy by planning and undertaking federal advocacy training sessions, identifying experts to provide testimony or to visit key policymakers. Build ad hoc networks of scientists who can serve as advisers on technical aspects of legislation or policy. Other duties as assigned. Senior Data Science Manager
The Lab @ DC is seeking a Senior Data Scientist who can use their expertise in machine learning and causal inference to make a positive, lasting difference for DC residents. Join our team of Social Scientists, Data Scientists, and Operations Analysts at the forefront of evidence-based policy. Working within the Executive Office of the Mayor of the District of Columbia, you will use insights from large administrative datasets to affect a variety of policy decisions in areas like  public safety ,  economic prosperity ,  housing and homelessness ,  public health , and  education . The Lab has the relationships and access to data in each of these policy areas to support this important work. As Senior Data Scientist, you will conduct original work and lead a small team of Data Scientists working towards shared goals for the District.Your contributions will directly inform decisions at the highest levels of DC government and allow you to see your impact on DC residents. What we’re looking for in a candidate: A drive to use skills in programming, statistics, and scientific communication to make a positive difference in DC residents’ lives, particularly for historically disadvantaged populations. Expertise in creatively determining which analytic approaches and computing techniques are most appropriate for a given dataset and policy or program need. At least a Master’s degree in computer science, data science, economics, statistics, mathematics, or other quantitative field. Expertise using R or Python (ideally, both) for descriptive statistics, predictive analytics, machine learning, causal inference, and other scientific methods to learn about and derive insights from the relationships within complex datasets. Experience accessing data through a variety of methods including APIs, SQL databases, SSH/SFTP. A plus for experience designing and building data infrastructure needs. Experience managing projects, including timelines and stakeholder conversations. A leader who can push both their team and data science in DC government forward. The Association for Psychological Science (APS) , a DC-based scientific organization, seeks highly motivated individuals for internship positions during the upcoming spring and fall semesters. Located in Dupont Circle, APS is dedicated to the advancement and representation of scientific psychology across the full range of research areas in this diverse field. With over 33,000 members from around the world, APS membership includes the field’s leading scientists, academics, educators, and students. APS publishes six highly respected journals, hosts an annual US-based conference and biannual international conference, publishes the monthly Observer magazine, and has a broad public outreach program that raises the visibility of APS members, their research, and the psychological science field as a whole. APS interns will be assigned to a team at APS from areas including Communications, Publications, Membership & Marketing, and Government Relations. They may have the opportunity to work in several areas during a semester. Assignment, hours, and schedule for interns will be established on an individual basis. This is not a full-time internship: When possible, APS will work with interns to craft a schedule that does not conflict with class or extracurricular activities.
