The Department of Psychology at Berry College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Developmental Psychology with a specialty in late-adulthood or gerontology. The successful applicant should have a program of research that can excite and involve undergraduate students. In addition to a commitment to excellence in teaching, service, and publishable scholarship, the faculty member should possess a strong interest in mentoring students in a residential college environment. Start-up funds are available, along with competitive internal research support and assistance in seeking external funding. Primary teaching responsibilities include Adulthood and Aging, Lifespan Development, Research Seminar, Introduction to Psychology, and other courses in candidate's specialty area. Additional teaching responsibilities may include other courses in the program and the potential to develop courses within Berry's Foundations Curriculum. The Psychology Department consists of eight full-time faculty and is consistently ranked as the second largest major (35-45 graduates per year). The faculty member may contribute to other select majors by developing coursework to complement their existing requirements; developing new internship or other field placements; planning on-campus programming or scholarly lectures; and holding cultural events that focus on national initiatives that target adults over the age of 55. There is also an opportunity to work closely with the Spires at Berry College, an integrated retirement community in which residents will enjoy the many educational, artistic, aesthetic, and recreational opportunities available on campus.
Applicants should have a completed Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology or a related discipline by August 2020. Applicants who are ABD should include documentation that their degree requirements will be completed by August 2020. Candidates should have expertise in lifespan development with an emphasis on adulthood and aging. Additionally, the faculty member should possess the skills necessary to develop strategic partnerships with local agencies that serve individuals over the age of 55.
The ideal candidate will have teaching experience at the undergraduate level and able to contribute (as needed) to teaching the department's statistics and methods sequence and possibly its capstone course, "History and Systems of Psychology." Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds are essential.
