Chair, Department of Psychology and Philosophy, Sam Houston State University: Owing to retirement of the previous Chair, the Department of Psychology and Philosophy invites applications for the position of Chair beginning Fall 2018. Sam Houston State University is a diverse regional comprehensive university that serves a large number of first generation students. The department is the largest in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences combining 11 full-time Philosophy faculty and 25 full-time Psychology faculty. There are 900 students pursuing the Psychology B.S., two psychology master’s programs (general and clinical), a specialist in school psychology degree, and an APA-accredited clinical doctoral program (with a forensic emphasis). The department houses the Psychological Services Center, which is staffed by pre-internship doctoral students working under the supervision of licensed clinical faculty. The Center provides court-ordered forensic evaluations for 22 Texas counties as well as mental health services to surrounding communities. Responsibilities include degree program planning and implementation, advocacy for all members of the department, planning for programmatic growth (including the possible creation of a School of Psychology and/or partnerships with SHSU’s planned medical school), faculty recruitment and evaluation, budget and resource management, student advising and recruitment, teaching in one’s area of expertise, adhering to SACS and APA standards and coordinating assessment efforts, supporting faculty and student research, fostering excellence in teaching, research, and service among the faculty, and other duties requested or assigned by the administration. Qualifications include a doctorate in psychology (area open), and a record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service. Previous administrative experience is preferred.
