Description:
Clinical Science Tenured Professor Search, Director, Behavioral Health Research Unit
Department of Psychology, Veldman Family Psychology Clinic, University of Notre Dame
The Department of Psychology at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for the Director of the Behavioral Health Research Unit at the Veldman Family Psychology Clinic (VFPC). This is a tenured Associate or Full Professor position in Clinical Science, offering a rare opportunity to shape the vision and growth of a newly established research unit embedded within a state-of-the art clinical research facility. As an Associate or Full professor, duties will include teaching, research, and service.
The Director will lead the Behavioral Health Research Unit, shaping its development from the start by defining its scientific identity, building its research portfolio, and establishing it as a national and internationally recognized center for behavioral health innovation. The Unit is envisioned to address behavioral health research across the lifespan. Areas of interest include substance use disorder and addiction, suicidal and nonsuicidal self-injury, and trauma. Candidates whose work bridges clinical science, intervention development, and community facing research are especially encouraged to apply.
In addition to providing strategic leadership for the Unit, the successful applicant will maintain an internationally visible and externally fundable research program, supervise and mentor doctoral students in clinical science, teach at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and collaborate across the VFPC's research, clinical, and community service missions.
The Veldman Family Psychology Clinic
The VFPC is a College of Arts & Letters Institute at the University of Notre Dame, which opened in Spring 2026 in a state-of-the-art facility located between campus and downtown South Bend. Its mission is to integrate science and service, generating rigorous insights into mental health and well-being, developing innovative interventions, and expanding access to evidence-based clinical care for the greater South Bend community.
The VFPC serves as a central hub for internally and externally funded clinical research while offering accessible mental health services to the public. It comprises two primary research units and one clinical unit: the Shaw Center for Children and Families, the Behavioral Health Unit (the focus of this search), and a Clinical Services Unit. The VFPC also houses a brand-new Human Neuroimaging Center, creating unique opportunities for research that spans behavioral, clinical, and neuroscientific approaches. Infrastructure, dedicated space, and staff support are provided to accelerate research impact. The VFPC benefits from strong Department, College, and University support: it represents Notre Dame's primary academic and community investment in mental health, reflecting a core priority within the University's Strategic Framework.
