The primary goal of the Department of Psychology is to cover the entire field of basic psychological and clinically relevant research. Department faculty group themselves into four major areas: Clinical, Cognitive/Systems Neuroscience, Developmental, and Social-Personality. The Clinical Psychology doctoral program has been continuously accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1958, and is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science. In May of 2013, the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System also accredited the clinical program. The program endorses a clinical scientist model for graduate training. This model emphasizes multi-level conceptualizations of psychopathology, comprising neurobiological, developmental, psychosocial, and multicultural perspectives. Doctoral students receive training in infant, child, and adult psychopathology, culture and diversity, infant, child, family and adult assessment, and neuropsychology. Support for diverse students and attention to diversity in their clinical training is a priority.  In all practica and clinical training experiences, there is a strong focus on evidence-based treatments. The facility has played host to many renowned performers. The University has a number of recreational facilities that are available for use by students, faculty, staff, alumni, and by the University's intercollegiate athletic teams. FMU has an outstanding NCAA athletic program that competes in the Peach Belt Conference. It has seven sports each for men and women. The University's school colors are red, white, and blue, and the mascot is a patriot. The Pee Dee Education Center is located on the south end of the FMU campus. The Center is a regional educational consortium serving 19 area school districts, 72,000 students and 5,000 teachers. FMU works closely with the Pee Dee Education Center to provide resources and services to school districts in the community. The University offers to the community programs and services in continuing education, technical and professional assistance, industrial and economic development, and artistic and cultural enrichment. We study these learning processes in monolinguals and bilinguals across the lifespan in order to promote optimal practices in education in both formal and informal settings.
